“Pura Vida!” is the motto of all of Costa Rica. Translated, it means “Pure Life” and refers to appreciating and enjoying life no matter what. Appreciating life motivates us to make the best of every situation. This motto also applies to our farms The Pearl and Mango Jam. This fundamentally positive attitude is not only beautiful, it is also contagious. We felt this especially with our small farm project “Finca Doña Elsa”. Shortly after we planted our baby coffee trees, the global Corona pandemic hit, resulting in travel restrictions. This could have meant an early end to our farm, but thanks to our dear neighbors and friends, we achieved the impossible with the spirit of “Pura Vida” and today we are happy to have a beautiful and well-maintained farm. This experience is one of the reasons why we expanded our farm project to “Finca Doña Elsa & Friends” – supporting each other and tackling projects together. Mango Jam is a refined product of this project.
Why A Coffee Farm?
Why Finca Doña Elsa? After years of carefully and lovingly roasting coffee, the Braune family has always dreamed of growing their own. The aim is to strengthen and deepen everyone’s understanding of coffee production. Most people encounter coffee during a well-deserved break. But before it can produce its delicious, refreshing effects, it must be processed, roasted, ground and brewed. In each of these steps, it is important to preserve the essential quality that the coffee beans gain while they are growing on the plant. While there are various processes to develop interesting flavors and aromas in the beans, you need high-quality coffee cherries to start with. In short: the most important factor in coffee quality is the cultivation on the farm. Every step after that is about doing the coffee justice.
For the SUPREMO team, close contact with coffee producers has always been a priority. Indeed, these detail-oriented enthusiasts have been sourcing coffee directly from producers in Central and South America since the very beginning. Bringing Finca Doña Elsa to life gave the Braune family a step closer and the possibility of realizing their dream. The land had not previously been used for coffee cultivation, so the soil was clean and fertile. The farm was ready for planting immediately, and Bernd and Raphael Braune immediately set to work planting the farm’s first Geisha coffee plants. Since then, they have waited three years of patience and diligence to harvest their first coffee cherries. The plan is to grow small quantities of quality coffee to learn more about the challenges of coffee production. It will also provide the opportunity to explore the potential of various coffee varieties and try out interesting growing and processing methods.
Finca Doña Elsa is unusual among coffee farms. The coffee trees are spaced apart to reduce the likelihood of plant diseases and to avoid the use of pesticides. Peanuts and other plants grow between the coffee trees, naturally maintaining biodiversity and soil fertility, thus providing the plants with the best growing conditions. At an altitude of 1950 meters, the Geisha, SL28 and old Ethiopian Landrace varieties are grown here. In addition, many other varieties are being tested in the experimental garden, such as Pacamara, ET47, Maragogype, Rume Sudan, Blue Mountain, Bourbon 72, Villa Sarchi, Bourbon Amarillo, Victoria 14 and Villa Lobos, to discover other varieties with potential.
